5/22/09 - Welcome Class of 2009- Our Newest DVM Alumni

Class of 2009

More than 1000 people were on hand for the CVM Oath and Hooding Ceremony on Friday, May 8th at the McKimmon Center. This special ceremony recognized the D.V.M. Class of 2009, Masters, Ph.D. candidates and House Officers completing their programs. The Class of 1989 was also on-hand to share some advice with the new graduates.

5/08/09 - In Memorium Dr. Julie D. Giles, Class of 1989

Julie Dove Giles, 47, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at her home. Julie was born in Greensboro, NC. She graduated from Greensboro Day School, attended Meredith College, and graduated from NC State School of Veterinary Medicine. Julie worked for the American Red Cross two years before joining a small animal practice in Washington, DC. She was a partner in the Union Station Veterinary Clinic, where she spent many years caring for her "animal friends" and their owners.

Memorials may be made to the National MS Society, 2211 West Meadowview Road, Ste. 30, Greensboro, NC 27407, or to the Humane Society of the Piedmont, 4527 West Wendover AVe., Greensboro, NC 27409.

9/17/08 - Dr. Meg Sutherland-Smith Selected as 2008 CVM Distinguished Alumna

The 2008 Distinguished Alumna for the NC State CVM is Dr. Meg Sutherland-Smith.  Following graduation from the CVM in 1989, Dr. Sutherland-Smith completed an internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City and a Residency in Zoological Medicine at the San Diego Zoo. She was then offered a position as Associate Veterinarian, and was soon promoted to Senior Veterinarian.  Dr. Sutherland-Smith received Board Certification in the American College of Zoological Medicine in 2005 and assumed the position of Veterinary Clinical Operations Manager in 2006.

 

9/05/08 - Class of 2012 Welcomed at Annual White Coat Ceremony on August 16

The Class of 2012 was formally inducted into the veterinary profession at the Ninth Annual White Coat Ceremony, held at McKimmon Center on Saturday, August 16, 2008. This year's ceremony was attended by approximately 600 people, and was sponsored by Hill's Pet Nutrition and SCAVMA, the Friends of the NCVMA, Nestle´Purina, Banfield, Fort Dodge, Intervet Schering-Ploug, Merial, and Novartis.

   
7/21/08 - NC State Reception at AVMA in New Orleans

We had more than 90 people join us for the NC State Alumni Reception, which was held on Monday evening, July 21 at the Hilton Riverside Hotel in New Orleans, LA. Everyone had a great time with plenty of fun, food, and fellowship.

7/11/08 - Dr. Dennis Wages Receives 2008 NCVMA Distinguished Veterinarian Award

The NCVMA Distinguished Veterinarian Award is the most prestigious award given by the Association, and is intended to recognize extraordinary individuals, who have contributed significantly, over a considerable period of time, to veterinary medicine in North Carolina. During his tenure at NC State, Dr. Wages has won many teaching awards, including the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award four times.  Dr. Wages became the Director of our highly regarded Teaching Animal Unit in 2000. The TAU is one of the “crown jewels” of our DVM teaching program at NC State. AVMA Meeting in Seattle, WA - July 11-14, 2009

The NC State Alumni Reception will be held from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Monday evening, July 13 at the Westin Seattle Hotel. Our reception has been assigned to the Vashon Room (1 & 2). Come join us for fun, food, and fellowship.

CE Opportunities at the NC State CVM

Feline Medicine Symposium: Saturday, June 13th, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the CVM. This course will cover several aspects of feline medicine encountered by practitioners, including infectious diseases, pain management, oncology, behavior and urinary issues. Small Animal Abdominal Ultrasound: Saturday, June 13th and Sunday, June 14th at the CVM. This program is designed to give veterinarians and veterinary technicians experience with diagnostic ultrasound. Disaster Preparedness: Be Ready for Anything!: Saturday, June 20th from 8 a.m. to noon at the CVM. Participants will learn how to create a disaster plan and kit for their animals; what behavioral changes their pets may exhibit under stressful conditions; basic animal first aid; and information about volunteering in a disaster or emergency situation. Canine/Feline Oncologic Reconstructive Surgery Laboratory: Saturday, June 27th from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. at the CVM. Topics to be covered include feline intrascapular fibrosarcomas, thoracic and abdominal body wall resection and reconstruction, hemipelvectomy and caudal maxillectomy. Cardiology Foundations for Clinical Excellence: Saturday, June 27th from noon to 4 p.m. at the CVM. The symposium will focus on three basic skills important in the accurate diagnosis and assessment of a patient with cardiovascular disease, specifically, cardiac auscultation, electrocardiography and thoracic radiography. Advanced Education for Veterinary Technicians - Cytology: Saturday, July 25th from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the CVM. Cytologic evaluation of lesions is a critical component of the diagnostic plan for many veterinary patients and often the veterinary technician is the primary person responsible for sample management. All necessary points regarding adequate sample collection methods and sites; proper processing techniques to prepare and stain slides and body fluids; and evaluation of quality control will be discussed.
