Welcome Class of 2013

The Class of 2013 was formally inducted into the veterinary profession at the Tenth Annual White Coat Ceremony, held at McKimmon Center on Saturday, August 15, 2009. This year's ceremony was attended by approximately 600 people, and was sponsored by Hill's Pet Nutrition and SCAVMA, the Friends of the NCVMA, Nestle´Purina, Banfield, Fort Dodge, Merial, and Novartis.

In Memoriam Dr. Julie D. Giles, Class of 1989
Julie Dove Giles, 47, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at her home. Julie was born in Greensboro, NC. She graduated from Greensboro Day School, attended Meredith College, and graduated from NC State School of Veterinary Medicine. Julie worked for the American Red Cross two years before joining a small animal practice in Washington, DC. She was a partner in the Union Station Veterinary Clinic, where she spent many years caring for her "animal friends" and their owners.
Memorials may be made to the National MS Society, 2211 West Meadowview Road, Ste. 30, Greensboro, NC 27407, or to the Humane Society of the Piedmont, 4527 West Wendover AVe., Greensboro, NC 27409.

Dr. Meg Sutherland-Smith Selected as 2008 CVM Distinguished Alumna
The 2008 Distinguished Alumna for the NC State CVM is Dr. Meg Sutherland-Smith. Following graduation from the CVM in 1989, Dr. Sutherland-Smith completed an internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City and a Residency in Zoological Medicine at the San Diego Zoo. She was then offered a position as Associate Veterinarian, and was soon promoted to Senior Veterinarian. Dr. Sutherland-Smith received Board Certification in the American College of Zoological Medicine in 2005 and assumed the position of Veterinary Clinical Operations Manager in 2006.

The Animal Behavior Service is recruiting cases for a clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a nutraceutical supplement for cats that urine mark (spray). More information is available on the CVM Clinical Investigations web site:
