6/20/08 - Nominations Sought for CVM 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award

We are now soliciting nominations for the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award for the CVM. We have several nominees who will be carried forward from last year, but we welcome additional nominations at this time. Please complete and return the nomination form, with any supporting documentation to Ed Smallwood by Friday, July 18. Also, if you have previously nominated someone for the DA Award and would like to submit updated information, please feel free to "refresh" your previous nomination.

5/14/08 - Class of 1988 Celebrates 20-Year Reunion at CVM

The Class of 1988 reconvened on May 9-10 at the College of Veterinary Medicine. On Friday evening, the Class was recognized at the Hooding and Oath Ceremony for the Class of 2008. Dr. Karen Rosenthal shared some words of wisdom from the Class of 1988 with the new graduates. On Saturday, May 10,Senior Associate Dean David Bristol updated the Class on some of the new developments at the CVM, including the Randall B. Terry Companion Animal Medical Center. Later on Saturday, we were welcomed to the home of Dr. Lora Evans for a catered BBQ and much time for getting caught up with everyone's life since graduation. More photos.

5/05/08 - In Memorium Dr. Charles Edward Stevens

Former Associate Dean, Dr. Ed Stevens, 80, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2008. Dr. Stevens served in the Navy during World War II, and received his DVM and PhD degrees from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Stevens was a professor and Chairman of Physiology, Biology and Pharmacology at Cornell University for 18 years. He joined NC State in 1980 and helped establish the NC State Veterinary School, serving as Associate Dean for Research and Graduates Studies until his retirement in 1992. An internationally recognized expert in the field of comparative physiology and digestive systems, Dr. Stevens had over 70 publications, including text books. A memorial service for friends and family will be held in June. Arrangements made by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas. Online condolences can be made at www.cremnc.com.

2/28/08 - NC State Reception at WVC in Las Vegas

We had more than 50 people join us for the NC State Alumni Reception, which was held on Monday evening, February 18 at the Mandadlay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. Everyone had a great time with plenty of fun, food, and fellowship. For those who may be interested, Oz Wilder (Class of 2004) was just too busy to attend this year.

1/28/08 - NC State Reception at NAVC in Orlando

We had more than 60 people join us for the NC State Alumni Reception, which was held on Sunday evening, January 20 at the Orlando World Marriott Hotel in Orlando, FL. Everyone had a great time with plenty of fun, food, and fellowship.

11/16/07 - Three Deans take up Gardening??

Well, not exactly. Deans Emeriti Terry Curtin (L) and Oscar Fletcher (R) join Dean Warwick Arden in breaking ground for the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center on November 14, 2007. A major "milestone" in the history of the CVM, construction of the $72 million "Terry Center" will begin soon, with a completion date of late 2009.

11/16/07 - Piedmont Wildlife Center Benefit Gala and Auction on November 17

The Piedmont Wildlife Center (PWC) held its annual Benefit Gala and Auction on Saturday, November 17 from 5:00 - 9:00 PM at the American Tobacco Historic District, Bay 7, in downtown Durham.

All proceeds go toward the annual operating budget for the center, which has more than 2100 wildlife patients this year. Dr. Cheryl Hoggard (Class of 2001) is staff veterinarian for PWC. For tickets or sponsorship opportunities, go to: www.piedmontwildlifecenter.org

 

11/12/07 - Dr. Steven Clark Recognized as 2007 CVM Distinguished Alumnus

Dr. Steven Clark, Class of 1989, was recognized as the 2007 CVM Distinguished Alumnus on Friday evening, November 9 at an NC State "Evening of the Stars" Gala.

Dr. Clark is recognized by the poultry industry as an expert clinician in turkey health and production. Steven is a member of the National Turkey Federation and the U.S. Animal Health Association, and is a diplomate of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians. At NC State, Steven is an adjunct professor, and has been instrumental in the support and development of the poultry health management program.

11/12/07 - CVM Alumni Meet at NCVC

More than 100 CVM alumni and guests attended the Alumni Luncheon at the NCVC on November 1, 2007. Dr Catherine Bruton (L) was installed as the new President of the Alumni Society by Past-President Sonja Szymeczek (R). The keynote address was presented by Dr. Barrett Slenning, who shared his concerns about the threat of the H5N1 avian influenza virus to the US poultry industry and the danger of a world-wide human influenza pandemic. 9/17/07 - Class of 2004 Establishes Scholarship in Memory of Captain Michael Fielder

The Class of 2004 has recently established the Captain Michael Shean Fielder, DVM Memorial Scholarship in honor of their beloved classmate, Dr. Michael Fieder, who died in Iraq on August 19, 2007.  Captain Fielder was a field veterinary services officer assigned to the 44th Medical Command, XVIII Airborne Corps, based out of Fort Bragg. Special thanks go out to Dr. Barrett Gift, who coordinated this effort for the class.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to a North Carolina, Texas or Hawaii resident in the study of veterinary medicine at NC State.  Preference will be given to individuals with prior or current military service.

 

9/17/07 - Class of 2011 Welcomed at Annual White Coat Ceremony on August 11

The Class of 2011 was formally inducted into the veterinary profession at the Eighth Annual White Coat Ceremony, held at McKimmon Center on Saturday, August 11, 2007. This year's ceremony was sponsored by Hill's Pet Nutrition and SCAVMA, the Friends of the NCVMA, Nestle´Purina, Fort Dodge, Novartis, Bayer, Pfizer Animal Health, Merial, and Banfield.

   
9/17/07 - NC State CVM Annual Open House Cancelled for 2008

Due to anticipated major construction at the time, the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, typically held on the first Saturday in April, has been cancelled for 2008. The Open House Committee made the decision based on safety considerations related to getting visitors to and from the CVM with all the construction equipment that will likely be in place at that time. The front walkway is scheduled for removal as part of the construction of the the new Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center.

   
8/17/07 - NCVMA Contributes $100,000 toward Endowed Scholarship Fund

NCVMA President, Dr. Scott Helms, Class of 1987, presented a check to Dean Warwick Arden for $50,000 on August 11, 2007. The endowment is for $100,000 with one installment of $50,000 this year and the remainder next year. Thank you NCVMA for this significant contribution to the College of Veterinary Medicine, and to the benefit of our students.

8/7/07 - Class of 1994 Establishes Endowment in Honor of Dr. Alan Feimster

Congatulations to the The Class of 1994 for establishing the "Class of 1994 Endowment" in honor of their beloved classmate, Dr. Alan Fiemster, who died unexpectedly on October 12, 2006. Special thanks go out to Dr. Kimberly Harry, who coordinated this effort for the class.

Once this endowment is fully funded, the interest will support three annual gifts: a $1000/year scholarship in memory of Dr. Feimster will be awarded to a junior or senior student interested in emergency medicine; a $500 stipend to support a junior or senior student to participate in a goodwill mission; and $500/year to help support the annual Bovine Educational Symposium ("Cowabunga") Trip.

We had more than 100 people join us for the NC State Alumni Reception, which was held on Monday evening, July 16 at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, DC. Everyone had a great time with plenty of fun, food, and fellowship.

AVMA Meeting in New Orleans, LA - July 19-22, 2008

The NC State Alumni Reception will be held on Monday evening, July 21, beginning at 6:30 pm in the Compass Room, in the Riverside Bldg. of the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel. (Note: This room is different from the one originally assigned to us by AVMA; the hotel has provided us with a larger room, overlooking the river.)
