Research Area

Issues that effect aquatic animal and ecosystem health and the safety of seafood products.

Research in our laboratory is focused on:

  • aquatic epidemiology
  • the ecology, captive propagation, and conservation of unionids (freshwater mussels)
  • the role of bivalves as indicators of ecosystem health
  • developing protocols for tracing the source of fecal contamination in surface waters
  • the food safety of molluscan shellfish products
  • the use of bivalves in bioremediation, restoring water quality and reversing eutrophication
  • the effect of environmental contaminants on aquatic animal health

Both field and laboratory research activities support these studies. Ongoing research is funded by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, NC Wildlife Resources Commissions, the United States Department of Agriculture National Research Initiative, and Nekton Research.

Outreach Activities
