CVM Participates in Triangle Global Health Consortium

The College of Veterinary Medicine is part of North Carolina State University’s participation in the Triangle Global Health Consortium (TGHC), an interdisciplinary partnership of area institutions that is organized to provide solutions for improving the health of people in North Carolina and the world.

In addition to NC State, founding TGHC members are Duke University Family Health International, IntraHealth International, North Carolina Biotechnology Center, RTI International, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. On Sept. 21, the TGHC is co-hosting an event with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Commission to address North Carolina’s engagement and strategic approach to global health.

According to the CSIS, communities around the world are engaged in a struggle against mounting health challenges such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, food safety, maternal and child health, and chronic infectious diseases. The CSIS believes an effective global strategy depends on the implementation and mobilization of science and technology.

In response to the CSIS mandate, a TGHC goal is to serve as an intellectual hub in North Carolina and engage area universities and research institutions in integrating scientific, educational, and service efforts that support global health innovations. The TGHC will expand communication among institutions and individuals through meetings, workshops, lectures, and web-based activities; will support participating colleges and universities through student mentoring and teaching programs; and will promote opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to become involved in service and research projects with consortium members.

“The Triangle’s rich environment of academia, government, non-profit groups, non-government organizations, and private enterprises in the biomedical, pharmaceutical, and high technology sectors provides tremendous opportunities for multi-disciplinary synergies and innovative partnerships,” says Nicole Fouche, executive director of the TGHC. “Ultimately, the consortium will implement a long-term strategy to establish the Research Triangle and North Carolina as a leader in global health and will generate sustainable solution for the most challenging problems.”
