New Pulmonary Function Testing Service

The equine medicine group is pleased to announce the launch of a new non-invasive pulmonary function testing service. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) is one of only two sites in the U.S. able to perform such testing.

When is pulmonary function testing indicated?

Pulmonary function testing is indicated for diagnosis and monitoring response to therapy for recurrent airway obstruction, including inflammatory airway disease, heaves, and summer pasture-associated obstructive pulmonary disease.

The testing is particularly helpful in diagnosing horses with inflammatory airway disease, which may only have clinical signs of exercise intolerance and cough, but with testing demonstrate airway hyperreactivity. For horses with heaves and summer pasture-associated obstructive pulmonary disease, the effectiveness of therapy with a fast-acting bronchodilator can be measured quantitatively, in addition to establishing baseline measurements from which to monitor environmental management and anti-inflammatory therapies.

Horses must be transported to the vet school for the test. The procedure is $150 with a free re-check to monitor responses to treatment therapies. For more information, contact the Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Equine Medicine Service at 919.513.6640.
