Now Recruiting Dogs with Acute Blindness Suspected to be Due to Optic Neuritis

Description
Ophthalmology at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine is enrolling in a clinical study to measure VEPs (visual evoked potentials) and RNFL (retinal nerve fiber layer) thickness in dogs within 2 weeks of the onset of acute optic neuritis. The goal is to assess whether the presence or absence of a VEP signal, or thickness of the RFNL, is predictive of return of vision.
Testing Requirements
Baseline: Enrollment based on include/exclude criteria
– Consults with ophthalmology and neurology
– ERG and Vision testing
– Collection of samples for infectious disease screening
– VEP/OCT under sedation (will be under pre-medication if clients choose to pursue MRI/CSF tap)
In-between the baseline diagnostics and the 6-8 week recheck, clinical cases will be managed at the discretion of the attending clinicians on the case
– Neuro-ophthalmic exams may be performed opportunistically during this time

– Consults with ophthalmology and neurology
– Vision testing
– VEP/OCT under sedation

Eligibility
– Blindness of less than 2 weeks duration, confirmed by ophthalmic exam
– Treatment (steroids, antibiotics) NOT started
– Normal ERG (performed at NCSU)
– Suitable candidate for sedation and/or general anesthesia
– Willingness of owner to return for a follow-up visit at 6-8 weeks
