CARPROFEN USE IN LACTATING DOGS

Description

This study is looking at determining the safety of carprofen, brand name Rimadyl, in dogs who are nursing and if there are measurable amounts found in the bloodstream of their nursing puppies. This study is the first to look at both the dams and nursing puppies, and will help guide us in future pain management recommendations.

Testing Requirements

Physical exam
Blood collection from both dam and puppies multiple times throughout the period of three days (the majority of these samples will be collected in the home to reduce stress)
Single IV administration of carprofen to the bitch, and milk expression and collection from the dam multiple times throughout the period of three days.

Eligibility

Healthy lactating bitch
Normal whelping and at least
14 days post-partum
