CVM Student Recipient of Markel/ AAEP Foundation Scholarship

Ashley Banes, Class of 2013 at NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, is one of eight national winners of a $2,500 scholarship awarded by Markel Insurance Company/ American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Foundation.

The competitive scholarship program, established by the AAEP Foundation in 1989, provides for the AAEP Chapter at each accredited college or school of veterinary medicine in the U.S. and Canada to nominate one fourth-year DVM student.

According to judging criteria, scholarship recipients must exhibit academic excellence, plan to pursue a career in equine veterinary medicine, and demonstrate leadership in equine-related activities that benefit the health and welfare of the horse.

The scholarship’s intent is to assist students who are likely to contribute to the practice of equine veterinary medicine on a broad scale and have a meaningful involvement with the AAEP in a leadership role after graduation. Approximately one in four applicants are awarded the annual scholarship.

Banes will receive the scholarship during the 58th Annual Convention of the American Association of Equine Practitioners in Anaheim, California Dec. 1-5.
