John Bonagura received his D.V.M. and M.S. degrees in 1974 from The Ohio State University. He completed an internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York, medical residencies in cardiology and internal medicine at Ohio State University and subsequently spent 20 years at that institution achieving his current rank of Professor of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. John was Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh in 1989. In 1996 he began a 5-year appointment as the Gilbreath-McLorn Endowed Professor of Veterinary Cardiology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Subsequently he rejoined the faculty at Ohio State as Professor of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and head of the Cardiology & Interventional Medicine Service until recently joining the faculty in the Department of Clinical Sciences at North Carolina State University. John has served on numerous ACVIM Specialty of Cardiology committees, including a 3-year term as President. His clinical experience includes both small and large animal species with congenital and acquired cardiovascular diseases. His research interests are focused mainly on echocardiography, congenital heart diseases, heart failure, and comparative cardiology. His publications include over 200 scientific papers and book chapters. Dr. Bonagura is co-author of a Colour Atlas of Veterinary Cardiology and long-time editor of Kirk's Current Veterinary Therapy. He is a three-time recipient of the Norden/Pfizer/Zoetic award for distinguished teaching in veterinary medicine, and has received the campus Distinguished Teaching Award of the Ohio State University Award. Dr. Bonagura is Professor Emeritus from Ohio State University, recipient of the BSAVA International Bourgelat award, the Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Barcelona, The Kirk Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Faculty Achievement Award of the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians, and distinguished Alumnus awards from Ohio State University and the Animal Medical Center.

My current research interests involve applying echocardiography to better understand and diagnose spontaneous heart diseases of companion animals and participating in multi-center clinical trials that affect how we treat our veterinary patients. I am also a resource consultant for comparative biomedical imaging, specifically cardiac and vascular ultrasound.
