2021 Pain in Animals Virtual Workshop

October 15

|Recurring Event (See all)

One event on October 15, 2021 at 12:00 am

Annually millions of people and animals suffer from chronic and acute pain. The challenge is to accurately measure this pain in order to develop analgesics for treatment. Along with the welfare concerns of animals and people being in pain, there is the need to develop new and effective analgesic options that may offer alternatives to opioids.

The 2021 Pain in Animals Workshop (PAW) on Oct 14th-15th is a 2-day workshop opened to research, academia, regulatory, and industry experts in the areas of human and animal pain assessment and analgesic therapeutic development. The PAW meetings are held every other year in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to bring researchers together who are working to better understand pain in animals and humans. Medical researchers are constantly working to better treat pain in animals and people. Pain is universal and the ability to measure pain is critical to developing therapies to treat pain.

This workshop will focus on Gait Analysis and Accelerometers to assess chronic pain in dogs and acute pain in food animals. Pain is inherently subjective and therefore challenging to quantify. Wearable devices and gait analysis are used in assessing human and animal pain via an objective metric. An additional session is planned to explore the use of transcriptomic biomarkers of pain in a clinical setting as prognostic indicators for assessing pain and analgesia.
