NC State College of Veterinary Medicine student Sara Tufts is one of five recipients nationwide of this year’s scholarships from Zoetis and the Foundation for the Horse.

The $4,000 scholarship, now in its eighth year, honors veterinary students for academic excellence, leadership and dedication to equine medicine.

It is the second equine scholarship that Tufts, a member of the CVM class of 2021, has earned this year. In October, Tufts was one of five veterinary students across the country awarded an Oakwood Foundation Scholarship. Both scholarships are administered by the Foundation for the Horse, the charitable arm of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Zoetis is one of the world’s leading animal health companies.

“I want to thank my NC State adviser, Dr. Timo Prange, and the veterinarians of Connecticut Equine Clinic, Dr. Michael Reilly, Dr. Scott Sears and Dr. Genevieve Williamson, who have all encouraged me to focus my career in the equine industry,” Tufts says. “Being selected for this award is a true honor.”

Tufts and other scholarship recipients will be honored during the AAEP Virtual Convention Dec. 5-9. There is a large Student Chapter of the AAEP at the CVM — Tufts is the treasurer of NC State’s SCAAEP — and the organization regularly honors DVM students focused on equine medicine.

Following graduation in May, Tufts will begin an internship at the Equine Medical Center of Ocala in Florida.
