Pairis-Garcia Earns Pharmacology Research Grant for Swine Health

NC State College of Veterinary Medicine’s Monique Pairis-Garcia has been awarded a Veterinary Pharmacology Research Grant from the American Veterinary Medical Foundation and the Veterinary Pharmacology Research Foundation.

Pairis-Garcia, associate professor of global production animal welfare, is one of two veterinary researchers across the country receiving this year’s pharmacology research grants from the organizations. Pairis-Garcia was singled out for her work to identify practical pharmaceutical approaches to easing castration pain on commercial swine farms.

It marks the first time the AVMF/VPRF research grants have supported swine research.

“Pain management is a critical animal welfare area requiring the development and validation of on-farm techniques to improve pain management in commercial livestock,” Pairis-Garcia said in a statement. “I am excited to have the opportunity to conduct research to evaluate realistic options for pain management in swine and improve animal welfare on a large scale.”

The grants support investigations into new or recently approved medications to fight disease in companion and food animals, as well as projects involving food safety. Kara Lascola of Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine received one of the grants for her research into asthmatic horses.

Monique Pairis-Garcia joined the CVM in June. She is a diplomate of the American College of Animal Welfare and works closely with the American Association of Swine Veterinarians, the National Pork Board and organizations dedicated to the welfare of farm animals. 

The AVMF is the charitable arm of the American Veterinary Medical Association. The VPRF focuses on funding innovative approaches to veterinary therapeutics and treatment of animal disease.
