The Pathogenesis of Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA)

Principle Investigator

Erika Gruber

Description

NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine is looking for IMHA patients for a blood sample study.

The purpose of this project is to investigate whether a key pathway that inhibits phagocytosis (cell ingestion) contributes to IMHA pathogenesis. CD47 (“don’t eat me” signal) is a marker of “self” that negatively regulates phagocytosis. We will determine whether red blood cells from dogs with IMHA express less CD47 compared to red blood cells from healthy dogs.

Testing Requirements

To participate, dogs just need a one-time blood sample. We need no more than 3 mL of EDTA-anticoagulated whole blood but a minimum of 1 mL.

Enrollment Start

02/01/2023

Enrollment Finish

12/31/2025

Eligibility

TWO signs of immune-mediated destruction
-spherocytes, positive saline agglutination, Coombs test positive
PLUS
ONE sign of hemolysis
-hyperbilirubinemia, hemoglobinemia, hemoglobinuria, RBC ghosts

Dogs that meet only two of three signs will be considered “likely IMHA” if no other cause of anemia can be identified, and will be included.
