Reflecting on a Milestone Year For the NC State Feline Health Center

Noting a national need for more cat-focused care, the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine created a Feline Health Center last year, consolidating all of its feline expertise under one umbrella and launching a streamlined effort to advance feline veterinary medicine. Here is a look at our progress.

A WORD FROM OUR CO-DIRECTORS

We are incredibly proud of the strides we’ve made in our first year. One of our most significant accomplishments has been expanding our team to include Danielle Tsukuda, a feline-specific registered veterinary technician who has been instrumental in advancing our mission both within the hospital and the program as a whole. Danielle brings knowledge and enthusiasm about feline-friendly practices, enhancing our ability to advocate for cats and ensuring they receive the specialized care they need.

We are also thrilled that generous donations to the center have allowed us to acquire equipment that greatly supports our commitment to providing excellent care for cats.

We also have proudly supported cutting-edge research conducted by both faculty and students, contributing to the broader understanding of feline medicine. Moreover, our collaboration with EveryCat on the feline symposium has been a key part of our effort to provide valuable education for veterinary professionals and cat owners alike. Supporting professional development for our staff in feline medicine has also been a priority, reflecting our ongoing commitment to advancing the field and enhancing the care we provide.

‘We created a Feline Health Center because feline care is often an underserved area of veterinary medicine. With our efforts in medical care, outreach, discovery and education, I am so proud of what has been accomplished in the first year.’

HOW WE ARE MEETING OUR MISSION

OUR DONORS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Beck Hallmann, owner of two sphynx cats, donated four mobile cat condos to the NC State Feline Health Center. The units can be wheeled where they’re needed, decreasing stress for cats and their vet teams. Their feline-friendly infrastructure, including quiet-closing doors, internal shelves for perching and separate litter box areas, help cats feel more secure in what can be a stressful environment.

“I hope this donation helps cats and their owners while bringing awareness to the veterinary world that feline health is important,” Hallmann says. “The research and the care that NC State provides are going to improve feline care everywhere, because the college’s work exponentially spreads.”

WHERE WE ARE HEADED

As we look to the future, we are inspired by what we’ve achieved and eager to build upon that foundation. We are committed to providing excellent clinical care and are dedicated to continuing our support for groundbreaking research and high-quality education in feline health. We aim to further expand our team, bringing in additional expertise to meet the specialized needs of our feline patients and to offer hard-to-come-by medical services crucial for their well-being.

At the heart of our vision is a drive to push the envelope on feline research, as discovery underpins every aspect of our work. At NC State, the synergy between research, clinical care and teaching enables us to excel in all areas. By fostering innovation and expanding our capabilities, we can continue to enhance feline medicine. We look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead and are committed to advancing our mission to improve the lives of cats.
