Pregnant DVM Student Resources

Resources to support DVM students during pregnancy.

DVM students who are pregnant should reach out to the NCSU Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO) to best understand their rights, responsibilities, and accommodations they are entitled to.

The NC State College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is committed to helping pregnant students successfully complete their curriculum and stay in compliance with all Title IX requirements. However, the DVM program is an in-person curriculum where there is an expectation to work with live animals. Requests for accommodations due to pregnancy or pregnancy-related medical conditions must be made to the OEO and not to any faculty or administrator at the CVM. OEO-approved accommodations for course requirements that are associated with pregnancy or pregnancy-related medical conditions are provided to each Course Coordinator, in writing, following a meeting with course leadership, the student, and their OEO representative.

No medical recommendations will be provided by the CVM or OEO; students should consult with their healthcare professionals for medical advice.

Accommodations should not fundamentally alter the course, but they may allow for delayed completion of required activities or modification of activities (e.g., lifting, time to nurse, etc.).

Pregnant/post-natal students can be granted a leave of absence for up to one year.

Students who feel they have been discriminated against due to their pregnancy status may report via OEO’s online reporting form.
