Observation of Feeding Practices in Privately Owned Cats with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): A Pilot Study

Nutritional management is a cornerstone of care for cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet accurately assessing what cats consume in the home environment remains a significant challenge. Cats are often inconsistent eaters, and discrepancies frequently exist between the amount of food offered and the amount actually consumed.

This pilot observational study aims to characterize real-world feeding practices in privately owned cats with CKD. Specifically, we will evaluate diet type, feeding frequency, caloric offering versus intake, and owner-reported feeding behaviors. In addition, we will collect body weight, body condition score, and muscle condition score to better understand how reported intake aligns with clinical nutritional status.

The data generated from this study will be used to inform future hypothesis-driven studies and improve nutritional recommendations for cats with CKD.

Testing Requirements

This is a non-invasive, observational study. No treatments or interventions will be assigned, and no changes to diet or medical management are required.

Participation may include:
1. Diet and Lifestyle Questionnaire
~ Owners complete a detailed diet history including feeding practices, appetite, preferences, and daily routine

2. Two-Week Feeding Record (Optional)
~ Owners record food offered and consumed over a 2-week period
~ Food amounts are measured using a gram scale provided by the study

3. Clinical Measurements
~ Body weight, body condition score (BCS), and muscle condition score (MCS) recorded at the beginning and end of the observation period

Owners are instructed to continue feeding and caring for their cat as usual throughout the study.

Eligibility

1. Cats diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (any IRIS stage)
2. Cats currently managed in a home environment
3. Owners willing to complete diet history and/or feeding records
