C-K9 STRIDE: Resistance Training Intervention for Dogs with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Description

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) in dogs is commonly associated with loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia), which can contribute to weakness, decreased mobility, and reduced quality of life.

In human medicine, resistance training is a well-established, non-pharmacologic intervention that improves muscle mass, strength, and functional outcomes in patients with CKD. However, this approach has not been systematically studied in dogs.

This study is a prospective, single-arm feasibility pilot study designed to evaluate whether a simple, owner-administered, at-home resistance training program is safe, well tolerated, and feasible for dogs with CKD. The results of this study will help determine whether structured exercise can become an important supportive therapy for dogs with kidney disease.

Testing Requirements

This is a 12-week clinical study evaluating a structured home exercise program.

1. Initial Visit (Day 0):
~ Physical examination
~ Bloodwork and baseline diagnostics
~ Muscle mass and mobility assessments
~ Activity monitor placement (PETIVITY Activity collar tracker)

2. At-Home Resistance Training Program:
~ Performed 4 times per week for 12 weeks
~ Sessions last approximately 10–15 minutes
~ Exercises include:
o Step-over walking
o Sit-to-stand (“rise-ups”)
o Controlled stair walking
o Light resistance activities

Owners will receive hands-on instructions to perform exercises safely at home.

3. Follow-Up Visits:
~ Day 42 (6 weeks): Interim evaluation
~ Day 84 (12 weeks): Final evaluation

At each visit:
~ Muscle mass measurements
~ Functional mobility testing
~ Owner compliance and tolerance assessment

Eligibility

1. Dogs diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (IRIS Stages 1–4)

2. Dogs that are medically stable and managed as outpatients
