Efficacy of LDBL in a Model of Canine Dementia

Description
As dogs live longer, age-related cognitive diseases are becoming more common. Many senior dogs develop behavioral and neurological changes similar to dementia in humans. Recent research suggests that low dopamine levels may contribute to cognitive dysfunction. This study evaluates an experimental bacterial live therapeutic designed to improve L-DOPA delivery, a medication currently used in human medicine to increase dopamine levels. Researchers hope this approach may help improve cognitive function and reduce dementia-related symptoms in dogs.
Testing Requirements
Dogs will come in every three months for 18 months. At their first visit they will undergo a thorough physical examination, complete cognitive assessments, receive an MRI with spinal tap and chest radiographs, and have blood samples collected. At each followup visit, dogs will undergo physical examinations, cognitive assessments, blood collection, and owners will be asked to fill out questionnaires about their dog’s behaviors.

Eligibility
Dogs must be at least eight years of age, over 20 pounds, have mild to moderate cognitive impairment, be food motivated, and have no newly diagnosed or pre-existing disease that is expected to result in death in the next six months or could interfere with the dog’s ability to complete cognitive assessments (such as blindness or deafness). Dogs must be healthy enough to undergo general anesthesia.
