Trinket
This is Trinket. She was surrendered back to me from her forever home in 2017 because she was diagnosed with Stage III kidney failure. Once we cleared her of the rather substantial hookworm infection and the bladder infection, which had been about 2 years in duration, she was re-staged to Stage I and she blossomed into what you see. She took Best in Show at the Charlotte SSC Specialty. Nothing like a little love and quality medical care. ~Cay, Apex, N.C.

Sampson
Sampson (our Frenchie) came into our lives in August of 2018. He believes in paying his way, so I let him screen my incoming calls at my home office. He doesn’t put up with any whining or cursing and will hang up on “offenders” at the drop of a dime. Best assistant I’ve ever had. ~Chris, Wendell, N.C.

Lexi
Lexi was a long-term patient with Internal Medicine and with out many, many doctors and techs we would not have gotten the extra 3 years we had with her. Last year she spent Thanksgiving week in the hospital, we even visited her on Thanksgiving day! Here she is back home with us in December. She is watching her daddy peel shrimp for dinner. She always got one and this is one of my favorite shots of her. You can just see her e-tube collar we had to give her the meds through for the her last few months of life. We lost our little Lexi the end of February this year. I am eternally grateful for all the hospital did for her though, they literally saved her life numerous times! ~Lynette, Burlington, N.C.

Koda
I got Koda from a Craigslist ad. He had been found in the woods at 8 weeks old and had little human interaction. He has a lot of anxiety and a strong fear of strangers, but when it’s just the two of us - he is the biggest goofball. The derp faces and goofy smiles he gives me make all the hard work, tears, and frustration completely worth it. Those are the moments that matter most. ~Emma, Durham, N.C.

Snoopy
Snoopy is our 10 year old Maltese/Poodle mix who is frequently seen in the back seat of my motorcycle. He is a member of the NC Patriot Guard and has stood in honor of many fallen soldiers and veterans at their funerals throughout NC. Snoopy never makes a sound during graveside services and doesn't even flinch during gun salutes. He has brought a smile to many grieving family members on one of the darkest days of their life. "Snoop" lives with 3 kitties, who he adores, and is frequently seen slathering them with doggie kisses. The NC State Veterinary Medicine Cardiology Service looks after him as he suffers from a mitral valve/enlarged heart. We always say he's a small heart with a BIG heart! ~Tim, Clayton, N.C.

Cria
Sometimes it's the same moments that take your breath away that breathe purpose and love back into your life, like meeting a new born Cria. Vet School has been full of challenges. It is also full of people that overcome them. That's what's wonderful about this field, is there is always a way to find the #momentsthatmatter. ~Danielle, Cary, N.C.

Bailey
I got Bailey from my local shelter. She was found abandoned on the side of the road with her two siblings, left for dead at 12 weeks old. She is a Rottie/hound mix. She has had more than her share of health problems and 3 surgeries in her short 5 1/2 years, but has been worth every penny! She is the smartest dog I've ever had and never ceases to amaze me. I even bought her a collar that says "Best Dog Ever." I take her everywhere. She is my child and best friend all in one. ~Gina, Stokesdale, N.C.

Rocky
Rocky was diagnosed with osteocarcinoma a month before our wedding. He had a leg amputated and then walked my husband and I down the aisle two and a half weeks after his surgery. Every moment we have with him is precious, and we bring him everywhere we can. People pet him and ask about his story and we spread awareness. NC State vets gave us an extra year with our boy, and we couldn’t be more grateful. ~Jessica and Sean, Durham, N.C.

Buddy and Eloise
"Cats and dogs, living together, mass hysteria!" (to quote Bill Murray's character in Ghostbusters.) It was like that when Buddy and Daisy came to live with us after my mom passed away. Buddy is just fascinated with Eloise (our cat) and often gets a smack from her when he gets too pushy. Here, peace is achieved thanks to an open window. They will sit side by side calmly, and just watch the outside activities for awhile. ~Michele, Wake Forest, N.C.

Domino
Two years ago, I was at work when armed robbers burst through the doors. It was a traumatic day, followed by several sleepless nights afterward. Work was difficult for some time due to fears of a repeat incident. I came home each evening and went to sit behind the barn and just watch our horses graze. It was soothing. Domino would see me and come to visit. He stood with me for hours over those few weeks. Everybody else was convinced I had everything under control. Domino knew I was still working through it. He felt my fear and was there to give comfort. It's amazing that somehow, he just knew when I needed him most. ~Jennifer, Charlotte, N.C.

I came home for the weekend for a break in preparation of starting my finals on Tuesday. I came to lay down on my bed and Roxie (my beagle-hound mix) jumped on the bed to take a nap with me. Even though I’m stressed about finals, she makes everything better! ~Isla, Greenville, N.C.

Bandit
Bandit is a very loving dog and I refer to her as "my little angel." I rescued Bandit back in 2009, from a situation where she was living in a cage outside, alone and in the elements. We bonded instantly and she would light up when I came to visit her. It was clear she loved to be around people and that she was not meant to be an "outside dog." I took her home on that second visit and she has been "my shadow" every since. I think this picture is a great reflection of the sweet, gentle dog she is and how much her human means to her. ~Helen, Raleigh, N.C.

Jetson
Jetson is my heart dog. He is constantly trying to protect me both physically and mentally. He knows just how to make me smile. When I started school, the neurology service tested and confirmed that he had gone completely deaf at the young age of 5. He was so well adjusted to reading lips and facial expressions that it was hard to tell. He has since excelled at reading faces and hand signals and continues to live a completely normal life. As a thunder phobic dog, this was a blessing in disguise. Although he no longer greets me at the door, I'm comforted when I come home and find him fast asleep without a care in the world. These are the moments where he steals my heart all over again. ~Liz, Raleigh, N.C.

Miss Daisy Clydene Pagan, our black Lab, recovered beautifully from her TPLO surgery from May 2017. We have had several pets treated at NC State Veterinary Medicine for various illnesses and we will continue to trust our pets with their care. We would never go anywhere else for specialty services. ~Joan and David, Sanford, N.C.

Moby
In loving memory of Moby, the happiest dog. My mom and I were going to the pet store for fish food, when I noticed the adoption day sign. I told her that we shouldn't go in since we already had a full house, but we did anyway. She told me not to look at the dogs; however, I couldn't resist when his big brown eyes caught my attention. Moby brought so much love and joy into our home. A special thank you to the oncology staff at the NC State Veterinary Hospital for taking such good care of him. ~Claire, Edenton, N.C.

Quiz
My last photo of Quiz. One of my hardest goodbyes ever was last year at this time. 16 years and 4 months of life with this sweet love, who turned so many people into cat lovers--including me. We grew up together in so many ways. He had been by my side since I was 21. Life is a little more empty without his purrs and hugs. No other kitty will ever be as awesome as he was. ~Niki, Holly Springs, N.C.

Boscoe and Sawyer
Boscoe has been my sidekick - my family - for 6.5 years. We added Sawyer to the clan 2 years ago. And almost 7 months ago, my wife and I welcomed our son Daniel to the world - no longer just a family of fur babies. It has been so rewarding to see how gentle and caring our dogs are with Daniel. They aren't small pups, by any means, but are so kind to every one they meet. We can't imagine our home without them in it and are so excited to see their relationship with their baby brother grow! ~Andrew, Apex, N.C.

Mali
I am a Registered Veterinary Technician and Research Technologist at NC State, but recently found myself on "the other side of the exam table" with my cat, Mali. This experience reminded me how incredibly privileged we are to care for other people's beloved pets everyday. Eight days of hospitalization, one CT scan, two endoscopies, and 30 days of esophagostomy tube feedings later, Mali is doing great (and is really enjoying her personal heating pad on these chilly winter nights)! Thank you, friends and colleagues, for saving her life! ~Laura, Zebulon, N.C.

Hank
This is Hank. We were lucky enough to find him 2 years ago at the Wake County Animal Shelter. This past September, we found out that he had an aggressive form of Squamous Cell Carcinoma in his mouth. With the help of Dr. Sweet and her Oncology team and the amazing Surgical hands of Dr. Villamizar Martinez and his entire Dentistry team, Hank is doing amazing and is cancer free! We can’t thank you enough!!! ~Edwards Family, Cary, N.C.

The big one was Rocky-Rocks. The little one was Madison-Lexi. That day was New Year’s Eve, not sure what year. We lost them both last year, 2017. We made the decision to help him cross the rainbow bridge, she went on her own in her sleep. My heart still hurts. ~Johayra, Clayton, N.C.

Mr Otis
My basset hound, Mr. Otis, was a neurology patient at the NC State Veterinary Hospital several years ago. He had IVDD, a genetic disease, that resulted in the inability to walk. The surgery he underwent gave him two and a half more years of life. I am forever grateful to the staff in the neurology service for those precious extra years with my sweet boy. ~Dare, Raleigh, N.C.

Stewart
Stewart loved his bowties. He always knew he was getting ready to go somewhere when I put his collar on with one attached. He spent the past 2 years going back and forth to the NC State Veterinary Hospital neurology service for treatment of an autoimmune condition and always wore one to every appointment. The staff loved to see which bow tie he was wearing and he quickly became known for them! His bow ties always gave him the appearance of normalcy even when he was very sick. An anonymous staff member made him a new one for Christmas last year. Unfortunately he is no longer here sport it this year, but his bow tie legacy will live on in his new brother, Percy! ~Jacquelyn, Clinton, N.C.
Stewart
Stewart loved his bowties. He always knew he was getting ready to go somewhere when I put his collar on with one attached. He spent the past 2 years going back and forth to the NC State Veterinary Hospital neurology service for treatment of an autoimmune condition and always wore one to every appointment. Zasperation
This is our beloved Birman, Zasperation, whom we just lost at the age of 16. He was such a wonderful companion and source of comfort to our family. Up until a year ago when old age really set in, Zas loved to run and play, was always trying to steal our people food, loved to find a nice pillow and human to curl up with and was our therapy cat when someone needed him! He was a long-time patient of the CVM cardiology service and we credit their loving care for giving us so many wonderful years with him. RIP our sweet boy-we love you! ~Stephanie, Cary, N.C.

Savvy
Savvy needed neurology care for a disc laminated to her spinal cord causing rear end lameness. She's a service dog I adopted from a soldier. She snoopervises my pilates practice daily. Her active life of swimming, mountain hiking and hunting had literally worn her back out. She had so much more life to enjoy and family to love. She even introduced me to my husband! NC State did miraculous work. I followed with great bodywork and “paw”lates. What a joy to have her in our lives. Thank you! ~Jeannie, Southern Pines, N.C.

George
My Boy George spent 12 days in your care. A tumor, Afib, pancreatitis, fever and more, the odds were not in his favor. But with the amazing hands-on skill of all at NC State and some prayer, my baby boy 9 months later is doing great and celebrated his 10th birthday!!! He’s my best friend and great comforter. ~Jean, Wake Forest, N.C.
