Morris Animal Foundation Veterinary Student Scholars Program 

Summary

Morris Animal Foundation (MAF) supports animal health research that advances veterinary medicine. This program aspires to provide veterinary students with hands-on research experience, new knowledge that advances animal health, publication in professional journals, and career advancement. 

Requirements of the Program Include

  • Students are expected to complete 10 weeks of full-time laboratory research over the course of the summer.
  • An orientation program for scholars and their faculty mentors.
  • Full participation in the VSP program seminar series that covers a wide range of research topics (unless participated in prior summer).
  • Presentation of your summer research
    • Practice oral research abstract presentations during the summer.
    • Presentation of a research poster at the annual Boehringer Ingelheim NIH National Veterinary Scholars Symposium (in August; optional).
    • Presentation of your summer research at the annual CVM Research Forum.

Eligibility and Application Process

  • Any first or second year veterinary student in good academic standing.
  • The student must identify a faculty mentor with whom to submit the application.
  • Students enrolled in a combined DVM/PhD degree program are not eligible.
  • Students are required to submit their application to the CVM Grants Office for internal review. Proposals will then be selected to forward to MAF for consideration for funding.

Applications are due in January. 

Funding

A stipend of $5,500 to one successful applicant from each veterinary college in the US.

Hitchings Awards

Summary

The George H. Hitchings New Investigator Award in Health Research supports pre-doctoral research by second-year DVM students and DVM/PhD students at NC State’s CVM. 

Requirements and Eligibility

  • This award is restricted to students in the second year of the DVM program or DVM/PhD students at NC State University. 
  • The student must identify a faculty mentor with whom to submit the application.
  • Please refer to the website linked above for specific application requirements.

Due date

Applications are due in early March.

Funding

It is a one-time award of $5,000 intended for academic enrichment and is for students who plan a career in academic teaching and research. Stipend is for academic enrichment, such as specialty reagents for a research project or a student stipend. The funds cannot be used for university tuition or general laboratory reagents.

AVMA/AVMF 2nd Opportunity Summer Research Stipend

Summary

Provides support for currently enrolled veterinary students who have previously conducted a summer research project and are seeking to gain a second summer of research experience.

Eligibility and Application Process

  • Second year veterinary student in good academic standing who participated in a mentored research experience over the previous summer. 
  • Preference is given to students continuing their prior research project. 
  • The student must identify a faculty mentor with whom to submit the application.
  • Students enrolled in a combined DVM/PhD degree program are not eligible.
  • Students are required to submit their application to the CVM Grants Office for internal review. Proposals will then be selected to forward to AVMA/AVMF for consideration for funding.

Due date

Applications are due in October. 

Funding

A stipend of $7,200 to five successful applications from veterinary colleges across the US. Plus $1,000 to supplement travel expenses to the National Veterinary Scholars Symposium.

Boehringer Ingelheim Research Award for Veterinary Students

Summary

This award is open to veterinary students who participated in the summer scholar program, attended the national Veterinary Scholars Symposium, presented their work in the form of a poster, and completed their proposed project work plan by December 30th 2025.

Requirements

  • A summary of the Scholar’s 2025 (only) work in manuscript format.
  • A letter from the Scholar highlighting their experiences from the summer research and committing to attend the 2026 Veterinary Symposium to present their work in a video.
  • A letter of recommendation from the Principal Investigator who mentored the student during the summer.
  • A letter of recommendation from the BIVSP Program Director of your university.

Due date

Applications must be submitted electronically and must be received by December 30, 2025.

Funding

The 2026 award recipient will receive $1,500 cash, be recognized at the 2026 Veterinary Scholars Symposium and if applicable will receive a travel stipend to present their work in a video at the Symposium.
