Focus Area – Equine Practice

The focus area is designed to prepare a student for entry level equine practice.

Steps to pursue a focus in equine medicine

  • Identify an advisor within the focus area.
  • Plan CVM selectives and other activities with the help of your advisor
  • Make contacts/arrangements for externships during summers and 4th year
  • Plan 4th year CVM rotations

Year 1-3 Courses

  • VMC 992 Active Learning in the VH (Equine Medicine)
  • VMC 992 Active Learning in the VH (Equine Emergency)
  • VMC 992 Active Learning in the VH (Equine Soft Tissue Surgery)
  • VMC 992 Active Learning in the VH (Equine Orthopedic Surgery)
  • VMC 992 Large Animal Practice -Equine Exposure
  • VMC 991 Veterinary Medicine and Farriery

Year 4 Courses

  • VMB 976: Radiology
  • VMB 977: Anesthesia
  • VMP 977: Autopsy/Clinical Pharmacology
  • VMP 978: Clinical Pathology
  • VMC 940: Theriogenology
  • VMC 968: Equine Orthopedic Surgery (2 non-consecutive blocks)
  • VMC 979: Equine Medicine (1 block)
  • VMC 975: Equine General Surgery
  • VMC 939: Gen. Limited SAP
  • VMC 982a: Ophthalmology or VMC 982 Opthal
  • VMC 966: Equine Emergency

THREE of the following (EPC counts at 2):

  • VMC 949: Equine Primary Care
  • VMC 978: Equine Lameness & Imaging
  • VMC 974: Equine Dentistry & Podiatry
  • VMC 979: Equine Medicine (2nd block)

ONE of the following:

  • VMC 971: Small Animal Medicine (2 blocks)
  • VMC 954: SA Medicine for Food Animal/Equine (1 block)
  • VMC 973G: Small Animal Surgery
  • VMC 973O: Small Animal Orthopedics
  • VMC 960: Small Animal Emergency

Extramural Rotations (in 4th year) – maximum of 6 credits (3 rotations)

Total Year 4 required rotations – 16 blocks

Students should consult with their advisor regarding extramural studies and other educational experiences.
