Steps to pursue a focus in equine medicine

  • Identify an advisor within the focus area.
  • Plan CVM selectives and other activities with the help of your advisor
  • Make contacts/arrangements for externships during summers and 4th year
  • Plan 4th year CVM rotations

Year 1-3 Courses

  • VMC 992 Large Animal Practice -Equine Exposure
  • VMC 991 Veterinary Medicine and Farriery

Year 4 Courses

Clinical Year Requirements below effective for the Class of 2018. For questions about past requirements, please consult Student Development.

Required

  • VMB 976: Radiology
  • VMB 977: Anesthesia
  • VMP 977: Autopsy/Clinical Pharmacology
  • VMP 978: Clinical Pathology
  • VMC 940: Theriogenology
  • VMC 968: Equine Orthopedic Surgery (1 block)
  • VMC 979: Equine Medicine (1 block)
  • VMC 975: Equine General Surgery
  • VMC 949: Equine Primary Care (required starting with Class of 2021 — previously in two of following below)
  • VMC 939: Small Animal Primary Care
  • VMC 982a: Ophthalmology or VMC 982 Opthal
  • VMC 966: Equine Emergency

Two of the Following:

  • VMC 978: Equine Lameness & Imaging
  • VMC 974: Equine Dentistry & Podiatry
  • VMC 979: Equine Medicine (2nd block)
  • VMC 968: Equine Orthopedic Surgery (2nd block) Note: Prior to Class of 2021, second block was required; a second block is now a choice among many.  

One of the Following:

  • VMC 971: Small Animal Medicine (2 blocks)
  • VMC 954: SA Medicine for Food Animal/Equine (1 block)
  • VMC 973G: Small Animal Surgery
  • VMC 973O: Small Animal Orthopedics
  • VMC 960: Small Animal Emergency

Extramural Rotations (In 4th Year) – Maximum of 6 Credits (3 Rotations)

Total Year 4 Required Rotations – 16 Blocks
