Clinical Rotations

Class of 2028 & Beyond

Fourth-year students must complete required and elective rotations that vary depending on the students’ selected Species Priority Area. Students must complete 49 credits in the senior year: 46 credits of clinical rotations and 3 credits in Clinical Conference.

The clinic year consists of 26 two-week blocks and runs from May to May. All blocks are two weeks long and count as two credits each. Because students are required to complete 23 blocks for credit, a maximum of THREE (3) Personal Blocks are allowed.

Clinical Conference presentations are required of each fourth-year student.

DATES AND COURSES

How Are Clinical Schedules Built?

The clinical scheduling process begins in spring of second year, with an introductory information session led by the Clinical Year Program Manager. This session will introduce students to the format of the clinical year schedule and help them build a foundational understanding of their clinical year requirements.

In early fall of third year, students will meet again with the Clinical Year Program Manager to discuss the scheduling process and train in the scheduling system.

The Preferencing Period

After the second class meeting, students will be given two weeks to rank their rotation preferences in the Medtrics System. This process will be discussed in detail at the class meeting in the fall.

The Optimization Process

Once the Preferencing Period ends, the Medtrics System will take in all of the curricular requirements, all of the students’ preferences, and all of the needs of each service. These will be used to feed a complex series of algorithms making up the Optimization Process, which will go through millions of possible scenarios to generate the optimum schedule for students.

Finalized schedules will be released to the students in early December.
