Equine Medicine

Teaching future equine veterinarians and specialists plays a large role in our department’s efforts at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine. The equine clinical sciences program encompasses clinical service, research, and teaching. Clinical service is related to work in the NC State Veterinary Hospital for referring veterinarians and their clients or can occur in the hospital of a requesting veterinarian.

Research involves examining hospital data retrospectively or prospectively or doing basic studies. Teaching includes lecturing and working with veterinary students in the clinics, working with house officers and post-graduate students, or developing training programs in the Equine Hospital or in outreach programs for practicing veterinarians.

Learn about our equine clinical services

We provide year-round equine emergency care, 24/7, for critically ill and injured animals, neonatal intensive care and high-risk pregnancy care, and urgent care (same-day, no appointment) for equine patients. Our collaborative medical teams include board-certified surgeons and specialists in reproduction, anesthesiology, pain management, sports medicine, rehabilitation, radiology, and equine/large animal internal medicine.

Equine Health Program

The Equine Health Program at NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine brings together horse owners, veterinarians, and college faculty on the issues, research, and advancements concerning horse health in North Carolina and beyond.

Support the Equine Health Program

NC State Veterinary Medicine’s Equine Health Program (EHP) strives to educate members of the horse industry, bring discoveries to practice that enhance the health and performance of horses in North Carolina, and train the next generation of equine veterinary clinicians, teachers, and researchers.

Gifts to the Equine Health Program are used to support these activities by funding training expenses for residents, interns, and veterinary students; providing seed funding for research projects; and offering matching funds to obtain state-of-the-art equipment and technology for the Veterinary Hospital, research laboratories, and educational programs.
